IntraRisk and North Carolina Blue Sky Foundation jointly developed
this computer animation showing the performance of two model buildings
under hurricane force winds. These two model buildings are identical
in configuration. One is mitigated using commercially available mitigation
packages and the other is not. The wind traces and the damage states
were simulated using IntraRisk's HurWind
and HurDam, respectively.

about downloading this animation.
At a gust wind speed of about
100 mph, the unmitigated building starts to loss some shingles.
At a wind speed of about 125
mph, due to increased internal pressure resulted from a large
missile hit, this unmitigated building losses one window and
one sliding glass door.
When the gust wind speed is
greater than 125 mph, pieces of plywood sheathing start to be
pulled away from the wood frame of the unmitigated building.
The entire wood frame is exposed.
Whole roof failure of the unmitigated
building.
Even at a gust wind speed of
greater than 125 mph, this mitigated house only loses some shingles.
Note the exposed secondary water resistance on top of the plywood
sheathing.
